The Pig Shed is a family friendly, pet friendly holiday cottage in East End, a pretty hamlet, near Lymington in the New Forest.

This rustic shed is filled with lovely things. Central to the space is a giant, beautifully presented four-poster bed, two huge armchairs and the kitchen table for 4. Next door, the gastro pub The East End Arms is perfect for special family meals, or those who need to escape to ‘walk the dog’ and have time out with the papers!

Walk to the beach in 1km. It’s sand, shingle and silt for the salt marshes, attracts thousands of migrating birds through the year. It is a wonderful place for some quiet time. The views to the island are magical and on a peaceful day there is no better place to be. Dogs are welcome here too.

In March 2019 Ploughmans was in the Sunday Times Travel Section as Best for Families in ‘Britain’s 50 best holiday houses’. In 2014 Ploughmans main house and the Pig Shed (together), was No. 2 in The Times Travel supplement for Best Family Self-Catering in their Castles, Cottages and Cabins article.

Here's your full run down of this place, inside and out...

Inside

We love the ‘Shed’, rustic and eccentric, with its four-poster bed across the garden. It's a peaceful and quiet spot. With the pub next door, you won't need to cook. You can even book in for breakfast.

The kitchen is basic. There is a sink with cold water, use the kettle for hot water, an electric hob, toaster, microwave and a large fridge/freezer. If you don't want to cook, the East End Arms is next door, or Lymington is 3 miles away with some great foodie places for you.

In the living room space, it's set up for vegging out. The wood burner will warm your toes. Giant over-size armchairs are ready to scoop you up for some book reading action. This is your time out zone.

The second living space is all about the bed. It's an ornate, four-poster affair with not one, but two mattresses. Blue fairy lights hang up for you in the roof space.

There is a small but effective wood-burner here and it really heats the shed up. Plus a large oil fired radiator. The shed is hugely insulated and keeps its heat very well. Super cosy and perfect for snuggling in!
There is an extra bunk beds in the little bedroom. They are built in and very sturdy. There is a shower room dressed in scaffold boards.

Children are welcome. The garden is fully enclosed. There are a few garden games.

Outside

The vegetable garden has been fenced to separate the two places. The fencing is sheep wire (not spikey) and post and rails. The garden is laid with gravel and has 4 raised beds full of flowers and some veg'. There is a small greenhouse which is used. There are masses of pots filled with flowers and most of the plants are mature and trying to take over the gravel.

Outside the Pig Shed is a proper sun trap. It can get really hot here and is THE place to get on your sun lounger. There is a upcycled washing machine drum fire 'pit' for people to use. Wood is free.

There is a further area by the stables if you need more space.
Garden : The garden is now fenced (in Nov 2020) around the vegetable garden and dogs (except Houdini's) can't get out.
Parking : Up to 2 cars. You will share the parking area with the guests in the main house. If you need extra space, there is plenty of space outside by the pub on the road.

Home truths

The floor plan shows the house and Shed, you are renting the Shed only.

Just across the garden is the Cottage. If you are renting just one part of the accommodation here, then there is a high possibility there will be another group of guests here. The gardens are fenced separate with wire fencing but whilst you can see through it 100%, the garden is mature enough that it feels separate.  Do see pics and the virtual tour for layout.  Whilst we do talk to guests and explain this, we cannot guarantee that your fellow guests will be as perfect as you'd like and you will need to be tolerant of them.

The garden is not set up for wild ball games. There is wooden fencing that really bangs when balls hit it. There are plenty of options for family play but we don't welcome wild and shouty play. Gypsy van available all year except Nov to March.

FYI - The kids toys and kit come primarily with the cottage not the Pig Shed. Ask us before you stay and we can move a few things across for you.

The driveway is shared with the Cottage.

Accessibility

You can park within 8m of the door, there is a slightly uneven path to the door, two 6" steps up into the shed, and then it's all on one level. The shower doesn't have particular provision for those who are less mobile.

The location...

This area between Lymington and Beaulieu is a sleepy and lovely part of the National Park. Ponies, cattle and donkeys live wild on the lanes and you must go slow because they have right of way - and they definitely know it!

The East End Arms is next door. The Turfcutters about 2 miles away toward the nearest shop in East End village. Lymington is 3 miles to the west.

Read the beach guide in the blog links below for more info on beaches.

Lymington is often in The Times ‘Top 10 places to live in the UK’.  Obviously we are totally biased and agree. It is marvellous. The quality of life here is very good. The town is surrounded by National Park to the north, coastal otherwise. There is a good mix of industry (boats) and retail. Less obvious is the connection to the rural workings of the National Park itself.
