The Pig Shed is a family friendly, pet friendly holiday cottage in East End, a pretty hamlet, near Lymington in the New Forest.

This rustic shed is filled with lovely things. Central to the space is a giant, beautifully presented four-poster bed, two huge armchairs and the kitchen table for 4.

Next door, the gastro pub The East End Arms is perfect for special family meals, or those who need to escape to ‘walk the dog’ and have time out with the papers!

Walk to the beach in 1km. It’s sand, shingle and silt for the salt marshes, attracts thousands of migrating birds through the year. It is a wonderful place for some quiet time. The views to the island are magical and on a peaceful day there is no better place to be. Dogs are welcome here too.

If you rent just the Pig Shed, we may also rent the main cottage to other guests. Please ensure you are happy with this when you book. More below.

In March 2019 Ploughmans was in the Sunday Times Travel Section as Best for Families in ‘Britain’s 50 best holiday houses’. In 2014 Ploughmans main house and the Pig Shed (together), was No. 2 in The Times Travel supplement for Best Family Self-Catering in their Castles, Cottages and Cabins article.

more about this place...

We love the ‘Shed’, rustic and eccentric, with its four-poster bed across the garden. It’s a peaceful and quiet spot. With the pub next door, you won’t need to cook. You can even book in for breakfast.

The space is all about the bed. It’s an ornate, four-poster affair with not one, but two mattresses. Blue fairy lights hang up for you in the roof space. The wood burner will warm your toes. Giant over-size armchairs are ready to scoop you up for some book reading action. This is your time out zone.

There is an extra bunk beds in the little bedroom. They are built in and very sturdy. There is a shower room dressed in scaffold boards.

Want to sunbathe? Open the bifold doors for a very effective sun-trap or outside at the table and chairs is pretty much wind-free and gets all the afternoon sun.

The kitchen is basic. There is a sink with cold water, use the kettle for hot water, an electric hob, toaster, microwave and a large fridge/freezer. If you don’t want to cook, the East End Arms is next door, or Lymington is 3 miles away with some great foodie places for you.

There is a small but effective wood-burner here and it really heats the shed up. Plus a large oil fired radiator. The shed is hugely insulated and keeps its heat very well. Super cosy and perfect for snuggling in!

Just across the garden is the Cottage. If you are renting just one part of the accommodation here, then there is a high possibility there will be another group of guests here. The gardens are fenced separate with wire fencing but kids can 100% see through it.  Do see pics and the virtual tour for layout.  Whilst we do talk to guests and explain this, we cannot guarantee that your fellow guests will be as perfect as you’d like and you will need to be tolerant of them.

The garden is not set up for wild ball games. There is wooden fencing that really bangs when balls hit it. There are plenty of options for family play but we don’t welcome wild and shouty play. Gypsy van available all year except Nov to March.

FYI – The kids toys and kit come primarily with the cottage not the Pig Shed. Ask us before you stay and we can move a few things across for you.

Families

Children are welcome. The garden is fully enclosed. A cot and highchair is available. There are a few garden games.

what makes this special...

The beach is 1km walk down the lanes. And it’s wild and lovely. The Shed is 3 miles from Lymington. And 12 minutes drive to The Pig Hotel. That means that you can stay here and eat out every meal and still have a fabulous romantic (and fairly budget) weekend with no washing up. Surely life doesn’t get much better than this?

If you have little children with you the Shed comes with a bag of kit for fancy dress and some toys. So you might get a tiny bit of a lie in…

We love walking from here to the beach at Tanners Lane. You can walk to Lymington along the coast and country lanes from here in about an hour.

Read real reviews from guests that have stayed with us at Pig Shed at Ploughmans

Such a good use of a different and small space, perfect for our family of 4 and the dog for 3 nights, it rained constantly but it didn’t matter as the environment was so cosy! The location is great, short walk from the beach and VERY close to a nice pub! Great stay!”

more reviews from our guests...

“We were three families with young kids (5 kids under 4) and we had a lovely time. The outdoor spaces are great for young kids and the location near enough to London not to be a chore and with a raft of local activities - the 3 year olds went on a 1 hour hack at nearby stables and we all went to the beach one day too, plus seeing the ponies of the New Forest (not so easy to see from the car seats though).”

Julia and familyJune 2018

We had a weekend family party, small children through to birthday boy who was 70. Everyone had such a good time, the house is so welcoming and comfortable. Keeping small children happy is key to everyone else being able to relax so finding a hoard of toys is a good start. A large and random collection of crockery and glassware also suggests that a slight accident isn't going to destroy the matching set! We spent most of our waking hours in the house in the kitchen diner, round the table chatting, eating and enjoying the view through the huge window into the garden. We really enjoyed the quiet surroundings, and the East End Arms next door was a bonus for our celebratory meal. We would all like to go back.

the location...

This area between Lymington and Beaulieu is a sleepy and lovely part of the National Park. Ponies, cattle and donkeys live wild on the lanes and you must go slow because they have right of way - and they definitely know it!

The East End Arms is next door. The Turfcutters about 2 miles away toward the nearest shop in East End village. Lymington is 3 miles to the west.

Read the beach guide in the blog links below for more info on beaches.

Lymington is often in The Times ‘Top 10 places to live in the UK’.  Obviously we are totally biased and agree. It is marvellous. The quality of life here is very good. The town is surrounded by National Park to the north, coastal otherwise. There is a good mix of industry (boats) and retail. Less obvious is the connection to the rural workings of the National Park itself.

The community here is very diverse in its interests and the town really does make sure that everyone is catered to…it is always busy with something going on from the Saturday market to St Barbe Museum, with multiple play parks and of course cafe and restaurants galore. And if you manage to get through all that, then you could always jump on the ferry to the Isle of Wight – just a short 30 minute journey across the Solent.
