Little Exbury is a colourful and cosy arty retreat hidden away in Exbury, far from the madding crowd. This cottage hits the holiday happiness spot for those wanting peace and quiet. There’s easy access to both country and coast.

The Beaulieu River sparkles beyond the surrounding fields, and the wide acres of the New Forest are just down the lane. Freshly redesigned, Little Exbury exudes comfort, style and warmth. The interiors are cheerful and inviting. There are vibrant colour pops, an orange sofa here, a citrus wall there, and lots of eye-catching original artwork from the Palais des Vaches – an exceptional gallery found further along the lane which was established by Little Exbury’s owners. Pop into this inspirational venue and maybe pick up a piece to take home – a lovely reminder of your New Forest escape!

Downstairs is a big sociable and relaxed open plan sitting, dining and kitchen space with inglenook fireplace and woodburning stove. The boundaries are blurred between indoors and outdoors with patio doors within the glazed back wall of the kitchen. Push back the doors to bring the outside in and take relaxed eating out. You can enjoy breakfast and mid-morning coffee on the terrace against a backdrop of birdsong or tuck into an al fresco supper under starry skies. The bedrooms suites are luxurious. Drift off on supersized comfy beds and pamper yourself in spa-style en suites. The downstairs bedroom’s en suite has a big walk-in shower while the upstairs bedroom has an en suite bathroom with freestanding tub under the window for leisurely soaks.

By the way, Little Exbury is a neighbouring bolthole to Moo Cottage. So, for a big shindig with family and friends, book both. It’s the perfect arrangement for creating ab fab memories.

Inside

Little Exbury has the appearance of a classic country cottage sitting in a timeless pastoral landscape. However, beyond the red berry front door of this cloud grey painted cottage is a contemporary open plan dining-sitting-kitchen space decorated in English eccentric luxe. This hideaway combines character, such as explosed beams, brickwork, wooden floorboards, inglenook fireplace and woodburning stove with chic kitchen, arty dining table, bursts of bold colour, and striking artwork. The colour palette includes a tangy lemon wall, zesty orange sofa, and exuberant patterned cushions, fabrics and rugs.

It certainly has ‘art and soul’ with a vibe that is both invigorating and welcoming. The big, easy breezy open plan kitchen-dining-snug makes for a sociable and relaxed stay. In the cosy sitting nook, a rug is thrown over the wooden floorboards, there’s a big, deep orange sofa topped with cushions, a wing armchair, smart TV, and shelves of books for settling down with a good read. The arty painted circular dining table seats four, and is positioned right in front of the inglenook fireplace with woodburning stove, perfect for toasty suppers.

The airy, light-filled modern country kitchen features rustic brickwork floor, sitting area with squashy armchairs, and island unit with stools for perching - inviting chatter while food is being prepared and drinks poured. A full length, full height glazed wall ensures food prep comes with a generous serving of countryside views! There’s everything needed for rustling up breakfast, lunch or supper, from air fryer and coffee machine to induction hob and oven. Slide back the big patio doors to open up the kitchen and living space to the dining terrace with table and chairs for moveable feasts against a backdrop of field and hedgerow.

Knocked out by all that fresh air? Drift off in the luxurious bedroom suites. There’s one on the ground floor, for super easy accessibility, and a second taking up the entirety of the first floor, reached by a carpeted staircase. The ground floor bedroom is styled in soothing blues and whites, there’s a comfy king size bed, wardrobe, armchair and views over the front garden and fields. The indulgent en suite features a big walk-in shower and basin on bespoke crafted wooden shelving. The first floor bedroom suite has another king size double, exposed brickwork, landscapes on the walls, long distance countryside views, and a pampering en suite with freestanding tub under the window for soaks with a view. Breathe in, calm down, and create memories in this inspirational space. A truly unique stay.

Outside

This is a secluded spot. Little Exbury is found down a private drive off a quiet country lane in an almost forgotten corner of the Forest. Just park up outside. The cottage sits behind a gate in pretty lawned gardens and is open to wide views of field, copse and hedgerow.

There is little here except another cottage or two, a farm, and a rather special art gallery, Palais des Vaches, further down the drive. The gardens feature a big terrace with dining table and chairs. The boundaries between inside and outside are blurred: simply push back the patio doors in the glazed kitchen wall to bring the outside in and move feasting out. Sip mid-morning coffee on the terrace against a backdrop of birdsong or tuck into a lazy brunch or lunch - which tastes even more delicious in fresh country air. Sundowner anyone? Perhaps al fresco supper under starry, starry skies? This is a simply perfect spot for breathing in and relaxing.

There is also one rather lovely rescue cat who likes to call Moo home, so she may try and join your guest list!

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this charming cottage! Waking up to the peaceful sounds of the country and wandering through the beautiful gardens was such a treat. The cottage itself was cosy, spotless, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Being so close to the farm added a lovely rustic touch — we loved visiting Exbury Gardens. We would definitely come back!
