What we love...

With its thatched roof, exposed beams, and timber frame, Cruck Cottage is full of historic charm.

Thoughtfully furnished and wonderfully atmospheric, it’s a great spot to unwind.

The location offers a tranquil escape with easy access to countryside walks and historic surroundings.

Do you dream of escaping to the classic thatched country cottage in a ‘far from the madding crowd’ chocolate boxy village? Then here you go! Cruck Cottage, named after its cruck (or curved) timber framework, is believed to be the oldest house in a very old village. It is also, possibly, the oldest cruck-framed cottage in Hampshire, but exact dates are lost in the mists of time – making it an idyllic destination for any architecture, history and cottage enthusiasts.

Step into the past. Cruck Cottage is ageing gracefully at over 500 years old. And as it’s Grade II listed, all of its quirks and character have been carefully retained. These include wonky old beams, exposed brickwork, inglenook fireplace, traditional cottagey plank and latch doors, and sloping floorboards.

Cosy. Comfortable. Quaint. A sympathetic refurb has mixed 21 st century comforts into oldy- worldy country charm. We love the freestanding tub under the window in the country bathroom – perfect for long leisurely soaks. There’s an AGA (for autumn and winter months) in the kitchen and a snuggle up log burner in the lounge-dining room.

The look is ‘country core’. Patterned and sisal rugs are thrown over terracotta tiles. There is a chunky sofa in plush sunflower yellow and a deep buttoned Chesterfield in a shade of autumn leaf, plus beams, old-fashioned cast-iron style radiators, and lots of antiquey pieces that add individuality and character.

Located in the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, very close to the New Forest, this gorgeous country retreat is spot on for a couple or a family with dogs who want to get away from it all, take big lungfuls of fresh air and walk for miles on ancient footpaths and drove roads, stopping off at proper country pubs. The Rose & Thistle, Rockbourne’s atmospheric village pub, is less than 50 yards away.

Here's your full run down of this place, inside and out...

Inside

The country charm starts with the old heavy wooden front door which opens, stable-style, onto a practical yet stylish entrance hall with exposed brickwork, terracotta floor tiles, and plenty of hooks for jackets. There’s a cloakroom with statement foresty green walls – Minster Green by Farrow & Ball if you’re coveting the look.

A step up from the hallway takes you into the modern country kitchen with slate grey flagstone floor, classic shaker wooden cabinetry, butler sink, AGA, retro Smeg fridge/freezer and flashy Ninja multi-oven. There’s a handy breakfast bar for quick eats and chats, plus all the kit for whipping up some delicious meals. But that’s if you’re not tempted to head off to one of the country pubs within walking distance, or the village pub three doors down. A traditional stable door opens onto a small courtyard, where a path runs down the side of the cottage to the gorgeous gardens with dining terrace.

The downstairs is mostly taken up by a generous and cossetting sitting-dining room. Relax by the cosy log burner in the big old inglenook fireplace. There is a dining table that seats six, dresser, TV, and deep sofas in shades of autumn leaf and mustard yellow that are perfect for flopping down with a good book. Off the lounge area is a useful little utility with cheerful sunshine yellow walls, masses of storage, butler sink, washing machine, and flagstone floor with underfloor heating - ideal for muddy boots and damp dogs.

Open tread twisty wooden stairs lead up (past a shelf stacked with paperbacks for comfort reads) to the first floor. The master bedroom suite with walk-in wardrobe and airy vaulted ceiling is perfect for peaceful slumbers - although taller bods may need to duck under the cruck timbers as they enter. There’s a second bedroom with two singles under sloping eaves and garden views. There’s also a large, comfortable, country luxe family bathroom, again with rich green walls, this time 'Garden' by Little Greene, rugs on gently sloping floorboards, a freestanding tub under the window for leisurely soaks, and a separate shower for freshening up.

Outside

Rockbourne is a quintessential English village all thatch and history on the western edge of the New Forest. Cruck Cottage is at the heart of the village – a wonky fairytale cottage of steep roofed thatch. There’s a gravelled area at the front - ideal for parking up and offloading. However, a private track to the side leads up and round to the end of the garden, where there’s plenty of easy parking, and the gardens and cottage can be found just through the rustic garden gate.

The country cottage gardens are simply heavenly. Reached through a side gate at the front of the cottage or from the courtyard outside the kitchen, they are south-westerly facing, catching the sun through much of the day. Draw breath, curling up on an inviting egg chair, sip a morning coffee, tuck into al fresco eats or relax with an evening glass of wine.

Steps lead up to a lawn edged by borders spilling over with shrubs and perennials, plus mature trees and a mini herb and veg patch for happy pickings, all against a backdrop of birdsong. Secure fencing all round means the gardens are perfect for all the family, including four-legged companions.
GardenGarden table & chairs / Swinging chair / Side gate access leading to the front of the property.
ParkingThere is allocated parking for 2-3 cars at the back on the property.

Home truths

- This is a very old building retaining all those characterful old beams – which is a way of saying mind your head when entering the master bedroom.

- A study off the utility room remains locked for the owners’ use.

- No BBQs or candles allowed. This is a village-wide rule as there is so much thatch in the village.

- The AGA is only on for the autumn and winter months – otherwise there’s a fancy Ninja oven.

- Walking to country pubs in the evening? We suggest you take a torch with you for the walk home. The village does not have street lights, so enjoy those night skies. Indeed, Cranborne Chase is an International Dark Skies Reserve, ideal for star gazers.

- There is an extra charge for logs and kindling to burn on the fire (October- March), but feel free to BYO!

- There is an unfenced pond in the garden, located under the hedge on the right-hand side when looking at the house from the parking area, down towards the patio. It may be partially concealed by foliage at times, so young children will need to be supervised in this area.

Location, location, location...

There are adventures in all directions with the New Forest on one side and Cranborne Chase on the other - a National Landscape and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with chalk escarpments and ancient woodland to explore.

Pull on your boots. There are footpaths to discover, perfect for dog wanders and pub walks. If you believe no getaway is complete without a good country inn, you are spoiled for choice. In the village there’s the excellent community-run Rose & Thistle. This thatched pub is only a gentle stagger away. It’s open Thursday to Sunday and much loved by the locals who recommend its delicious menus, including small plates and pub classics. There’s a circular trail across farmland to The Cartwheel Inn at Whitsbury, a friendly country inn.

If you’re stocking up your cupboards, Fordingbridge is the nearest town, with an old- fashioned shopping experience, including bakers, butchers, greengrocers, plus pubs and cheese and wine bar. Rockbourne is also midway between the cathedral city of Salisbury and the market town of Ringwood for further forays.

We are visiting from Australia and in the New Forest to see family. In the past we have stayed at Sandy Balls but wanted to feel more immersed in forest life so booked Cruck Cottage - it did not disappoint. The cottage is well equipped, cosy and the garden is a perfect spot for winding down on a summer afternoon. We had a lovely meal at the Rose and Thistle and would recommend for families wanting to stay local. Thank you for providing a wonderful stay.

We had a lovely time here, visiting family and enjoying the heat of the garden. The house is gorgeous and offered a wonderful rest-bite from the heat for Wimbledon and Tour de France watching. Thank you for such a beautiful cottage - especially loved nearby horse fields and riders going past, a novelty for us city folk!
