Sitting pretty amongst a hidden country lane, the gorgeous ‘Lookout’ is quite the find- with extraordinary wildlife- dotted views that are sure to still your heart & quiet your mind. Settle in and take a seat on the decking to really soak up the good life… Amongst the endless, green- filled acres that will unfold in front of you, the grazing deer and galloping ponies make this jaw- dropping ‘oil painting’ really come to life.

Offering all of the creature comforts required to make you feel completely at home (we love the rustic wood & the luxe, heavy fabrics), a special stay is written in the stars… Steeped in over 500 years of history, it is no surprise that authors have sought solace & inspiration here in previous eras; penning their own magical tales amongst the Beatrix Potter-esque sights that surround.

Wake up to wanderlust and breakfast with birdsong (you will definitely want to fuel-up before a day of abundant countryside pursuits!). Just steps from your front door, the National Park is quite literally your back garden… Be it by foot, by bike, or by hoof; however you choose to explore, we highly recommend a pub pit stop on your travels.

As the evening draws in, just follow the convoy of donkeys to find your way home!

Inside

Through the stable door and into the pages of true escapism…

From the gorgeous, embroidered curtains, to the plump seats and charming decor, we felt as if we were being welcomed in by an old friend when we first entered The Lookout’s living room! Embracing all things country-living; the traditional style of furnishings chosen for this sanctuary make it the perfect spot to curl-up together with a glass of red and a deck of cards. The sofa bed here is also available (upon request) for an extra child or adult to bed-down.

In the kitchen, you’ll find modern styling, where newly renovated fixtures & fittings privide all you need to fix up a feast (foraged from finds at the Gourmet Grocer, or Fordingbridge Farm Shop perhaps).

Whatever you whip up, you’ll be hard pushed to find a table anywhere in the New Forest with more of a breath-taking backdrop than this… that is unless you take supper out under the stars on your balcony!

When it’s time to hunker down, your striking green bedroom promises a serene slumber, with the gentle rustling of trees outside lulling you to sleep… And, as the dawn chorus starts up again, freshen up (the sleek shower bathroom is perfect for the job) and get ready for forest-filled fun.

Outside

Birdsong has never sounded sweeter than from The Lookout’s terrace, where you can soak up the most serene sounds and sights with your morning coffee (be sure to come back come nightfall with a glass of something to watch the wildlife bed down!)

As well as the elevated decking, you also have the lawned area to stretch out amongst… feel free to enjoy an apple or two if the tree is bountiful!

The showstopping view here blends in with your garden to make your garden seem endless. Although there is a boundary fence (please refer to home truths) the New Forest National Park is your playground, only steps away from your front door.
GardenGarden dining table & chairs / Charcoal BBQ.
ParkingThere is allocated parking for one car.

The Lookout does not currently have EV charging facilities, or access to charge your car from the mains.

Home truths

One well behaved dog is welcome to join the fun and; whilst we recommend a stay for two; either one extra child, or one extra adult, may use the sofa bed (this a chargeable extra at £15 pp/pn and will need to be pre-agreed with us upon booking ).

The paved driveway and path match the country aesthetic of your gorgeous cottage, but please take care on the uneven surface.

You can park 1-2 cars here, but please ensure that you only park in your designated driveway, and that you keep the gate shut (to keep hungry wildlife out!). With your neighbours driveway at the top of your gated drive, please ensure you do not park on this part as you may block residents in.

Please keep children away from the gas fire as it does not have a gate.

Your view-filled garden is to be enjoyed, but please note that the fenced area marks the boundary, and has been put in place to protect nature (and guests from the nettles down here!)

The decked area/ balcony area is slightly raised. Although there are balustrades, please do take care. You may also spot an old shed camouflaged amongst the garden’s greenery- please do avoid this and keep children away the structure is old and needs replacing.

Pssst… Part of this home’s charm is its rustic & traditional style, so you may find the odd spider has made themselves at home amongst the windows.

Accessibility

All rooms are on one level, but the pathway/driveway leading to your door is on a hill & is cobbled and uneven.

Step inside 'that' view...

The North Taste Trail is only 100 yards from your doorstep. Join the off-road cycle track, which loops for 15 scenic filled miles, to head across Hampton Ridge & reach the beautiful hamlet of Fritham Village. This is bliss for bikers & hikers, and riders can also take a hack here (check out Arniss Equestrian).

Whether you choose to explore by foot, by bike, or by hoof; a good forest stomp deserves a good pit stop... and there are plenty to choose from! The lovely owners rate The Foresters (just up the road), The Royal Oak (only 1.4 miles away), The Alice Lisle (3.6 miles away) and The Highcorner Inn (6.9 miles away). For a treat eat, book a table at Les Mirabelles (8 miles away).

With THE most breathtaking views back home, we'd also recommend simply hunkering down at home with a glass of something refreshing (stock up at Fordingbridge's butchers, grocers & farm shop). If you have any supper snippets left over, pack a picnic and head to Latchemere Brook (15 min walk) the next day.

Lovely quiet place, bought 2 bikes so pent 2 days cycling without having to take the car which was great. Hampton Ridge to Firtham, Odgens/North Gorley and walked in Hasley inclosure.

The location was really good for feeling lost on the Moor but still a few minutes drive to Fordingbridge to get groceries. The garden is well fenced for dogs, which gives you a less stressful / piece of mind break. The cottage admin was faultless and exceptionally prepared for arrival. Overall well fitted and presented for the price point. We tend to try new places everywhere we go but this one is on our radar for another mini break

Absolutely stunning location, the property managers were amazing and the owners were super friendly and helpful. The place is cosy and spotless, and right in the thick of it with lovely walks in all directions. You’re also only 30 mins from the coast so have lots of variety to choose from if you’re an outdoorsy person. The view - wow! We were lucky enough to have sunshine and a view of wild horses grazing on our first morning which was just magical. Inside, everything you could need in a home away from home. A couple of things to be aware of: if you arrive at night it’s pitch black and hard to spot, also the directions were based on my coming from the other direction so it took a while. The owners prefer the gate to be closed which is a bit of a faff every time you come in and go out - but apparently otherwise deer can run into the garden and struggle to get back out! Minor things that didn’t detract from the experience but might be helpful to know in advance :)

Really enjoyed the stay, birdsong was a highlight, as was the beautiful view. Great location for wildlife lovers, short walk to see the Stonechats, Warblers and even Crossbill. Lovely cottage, clean, comfortable and welcoming. Enjoyed birdwatchingat Boulderwood Deer Sanctuary and Keyhaven.

A fairy-tale like cottage and location and a relaxing stay. I slept like a dog in that most comfortable bed! Suggestion- it would be most interesting to learn about the history of this place; perhaps a print out on arrival. We visited and spent some quality time with family living in the area.

Such a lovely, well equipped cottage in the perfect location for a quiet getaway. The view is truly lovely. It has a comfortable bed and our dog Fudge loved being in the garden. We drove through the forest to Lepe Country Park. A great beach with views of the Isle Of Wight. We walked the red route (2 miles) at Bolderwood which was a great, short walk. Also in Lyndhurst- can't praise the coffee and walnut cake at 'Michelles New Forest Kitchen' enough!

What can we say! A lovely birthday weekend away! Warmly welcomed, cosy, quirky cottage with fab views and a great intro into The New Forest. We walked, walked, walked some more. The most enjoyable meal was at The Foresters accompanied by donkeys and ponies.

What an absolute gem of a place! From the very first night when fallow dear magically came to the door, we loved every single minute. We saw buzzard, bullfinch, redwings and other garden birds from the deck and fell in love with the location. We also bumped into Doug (the owner) who gave us great local advice. Everything about our stay was perfect... expect it wasn't long enough.

What a gem in the New Forest! An attractive place with all the trimmings. The weather was kind to us, so could enjoy the beautiful view and the garden even more after our nice walks. The cottage was very pleasant with an attractive homely interior. We immediately felt at home! We walked at Bucklers Hard, Fritham, Lyndhurst, The Rufus Stone. We enjoyed the lovely view from the Lookout Deck and met the local fallow deer.

Lieneke & Patrick October 2023

We have loved out stay in the Lookout, a very comfortable and cosy cottage, well equipped, with everything we needed. The forest location is stunning and the view wonderful. The Deer visited regularly in search of acorns - so special to see. We enjoyed walks from the cottage and around Godshill (Park at Godshill inclosure) Favourite places - Bucklers Hard, Lymington (Good Saturday market) and Milford on Sea.

Sue & Mostyn September 2023

I was literally blown over by the views here, and felt lost in the landscape from the terrace. With the forest quite literally on your doorstep, this is the perfect spot to spend the days exploring and the nights hunkering down. I didn't want to leave!

There is a magical feeling at The Lookout, where the views and the charming cottage transport you back in time. Having your morning coffee with these views is something very special, and I love the fact that you feel like you are immersed in a wilderness documentary with all of the different species of animals roaming the landscape! The abundance of tracks here also means that you can explore at your own pace; with walking, biking and horse riding all there for the taking.
