Is the New Forest Dog Friendly?

With an array of dog-friendly attractions, pubs, woodland trails and inspiring open landscapes, the New Forest is renowned for being just as good a holiday spot for dogs as their owners!

So, yes the New Forest is undoubtedly dog-friendly, but there are a few things to bear in mind when visiting.

Is the New Forest National Park Dog-Friendly?

Ancient woodland, picturesque heathland, stunning coastline and endless winding tracks all make the New Forest National Park a dog walker’s paradise.

As a national park, the New Forest is a protected landscape with great environmental and cultural importance. While dogs are very welcome across the whole of the park, the National Park Authority does ask that you follow the dog walking code to help maintain the area and ensure everyone can enjoy its special qualities.

The New Forest Dog Walking Code

Because of its status as a national park and the famous free-roaming animals, it’s especially important that you follow best dog walking practices here.

// Keep your dog under control (reliable recall or kept on a lead) and within sight.

//Be mindful of others and prevent your dog from approaching other walkers.

// Put your dog on its lead if another approaching dog is also on a lead.

// Always pick up after your dog.

// Keep your distance from the New Forest’s animals and wildlife.

// Keep to the main tracks to avoid disturbing wildlife, especially ground-nesting birds.

// Keep your dog on a lead when by car parks and roads.

// Follow any warning or safety signs across the forest.

// Do not park up in gateways or verges as it can restrict access for forest vehicles and emergency services.

Walking Your Dog Around the New Forest’s Free-Roaming Animals

The New Forest is home to free-roaming ponies, donkeys, pigs, cattle and sheep which can be seen across the park at different times of the year. While it can be exciting to come across some of the New Forest’s most beloved locals, it’s really important that you keep your distance, no matter if you’re walking with or without dogs.

The free-roaming animals may look friendly but they are not domesticated. If you or your dog get too close, they may bite or kick. Their behaviour can be especially unpredictable when around their young.

If you encounter livestock when on a walk, give them plenty of space and don’t allow your dog to get too close, chase or bark at them.

Keeping to the designated main tracks also helps reduce the risks of your dog coming into contact with potential hazards like ticks or adders.

Where Can I Walk My Dog in the New Forest?

So long as you’re mindful of the dog walking guidelines, you and your dog can take your pick of walks as you’ll be able to access all of the trails throughout the national park.
