Riverview Cottage is gorgeous – a handsome bay windowed Victorian villa sitting behind a picket fence on a country lane. Close by is ‘Brock Beach’, a stretch of the Lymington River where clear shallow waters tempt paddling. Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa is an easy stroll and Brockenhurst, a bustly village in the heart of the Forest, is under a mile away.

The cottage is both chic and sumptuous. Period character features, such as dado rails, panelled doors, wooden floorboards and sash windows, are combined with plush sofas, statement artwork, antique pieces, and patterned rugs.

There are rooms for nestling down. One is a snug in drawing room red with woodburning stove, deep sofa, and smart TV. Another is a reading room with woodburning stove, window seats, a desk and inviting sofas piled with cushions.

Get-together spaces include a big farmhouse kitchen-breakfast room, with cabinets painted a striking shade of leaf, that’s open to a richly decorated dining room, spot on for cosy suppers. Alternatively, along the back of the property is a funky, light-drenched, sociable ‘garden room’ with dining and sitting areas, wood-burning stove and mini kitchen – perfect for preparing drinks and nibbles to take into the garden. Simply fold back the full length glazed doors to open up the room to the glorious, south-facing gardens.

At the end of the day, climb the wide stairs for sweet slumbers in one of four spacious double bedrooms decorated in soothing shades of woodland and river. Everyone can squirrel themselves away. The two bedrooms at the front have luxe boutique en suites, while the two bedrooms at the back have garden views and are close to the family bathroom with bathtub and walk-in shower.

Inside

Riverview Cottage mixes country with chic and cosy with luxe. Step through the classic Victorian style front door into a traditional porch with patterned tiled floor, pegs for coats and space for muddy boots.

This leads into a reception hall where period detail, rugs over floorboards, and walls in Farrow & Ball warm neutrals, hung with big colourful paintings, sets the tone. It’s a vibrant voguish update on the classic country cottage - mixing textures, painted furniture and modern artwork with mid-century vintage and antiques. To one side of the hallway are two ‘snugs’. One is more of a reading room with shelves of books, fern green sofa heaped with cushions in damson, expressionistic landscapes on dusky rose walls and woodburning stove. There’s a desk and window seats in the bay – perfect for time out. ‘Snug’ number two is painted dramatic drawing room red with deep sofa, smart TV, statement artwork and woodburning stove – great for cosying up and hiding away.

On the other side of the hallway is a big farmhouse kitchen-breakfast room with Belfast sink, range-style cooker, cabinets in leaf green and window seats. Here is everything needed for rustling up breakfast, lunch and supper – however with a selection of excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants a stroll away, you’ll be tempted to head out to eat! The kitchen is open to the dining room which has patio doors onto the terrace, plus antique sideboard, dresser painted berry red, pendant lights over the dining table and woodburning stove. Perfect for suppers by firelight. Pass the port!

A huge garden room provides another fab, relaxed hang-out space. This bright, light room has roof lanterns and two sides of full length glass doors which fold back, opening the room to the wrap-round dining terrace and lush gardens. There are deep sofas around another wood burning stove, heaps of cushions and lots of colour. A pale wood dining table comfortably seats eight to ten, plus there’s a drinks’ cabinet and useful mini kitchen with sink, wine fridge, drinks’ cabinet and a display of beautiful pieces such as copper kettles and ceramics.

Character and practicality are also found in the cloakroom with panelling painted darkest forest, terracotta floor tiles and opulent patterned wallpaper. In addition, there’s a well-organised utility with washer/dryer, Belfast sink, plus a door onto the terrace for access to the log store.

Upstairs, off the galleried landing, four spacious double bedrooms are decorated in soft shades of moss, plum, berry and river greens. The master bedroom at the front has views over the lane and a huge en-suite with walk-in shower. There’s another big double at the front with a boutique en suite. At the back a twin room in moody blues and a generous double in soft plum both overlook the gardens. As does the luxe family bathroom which has a tub for leisurely soaks and a big walk-in shower with glossy woodland green tiles.

Outside

This picture postcard perfect cottage sits prettily behind a picket fence on a country lane that leads to open Forest. Simply drive across the cattle grid and onto the shingled driveway for masses of easy parking. With open Forest and destination restaurants within a relaxed stroll you may be tempted to leave your car right there.

A feature of Riverview Cottage are the beautiful, south-facing gardens. These can be reached via the side of the cottage or from doors off the garden room, dining room and utility. The gardens with terraces, lawns, high hedges, weeping willow and views across water meadows are almost an additional living space. Corners to sit and relax include the sunny dining terrace with tables and chairs and table tennis table, a cobalt blue garden bench beside a fire pit, and a contemporary glazed garden studio on a raised veranda. You can pull back the sides and the roof to open up this space. Kick back on a lounger or slip into the wicker chair hanging from an overhead beam – sure to be a favourite for relaxing with a book and a glass of something delicious.

Whether sipping a morning coffee, tucking into an al fresco feast, perhaps using the gas BBQ, or enjoying a sundowner, relax and soak up the peace and birdsong. Riverview Cottage is a simply stunning retreat.

Home truths

- There is no access to the garage.
- Please don't access the back field - this is private. The river can get quite high and potentially unsafe.
- Dogs are welcome on the ground floor.
- For security reasons there is a camera installed outside of the property and side access.
- There is an extra charge for logs and kindling to burn on the fire (October- March) but feel free to BYO!
- Please note that there will be 1 car left in the driveway during your stay.
- Please make sure to keep the front gate closed at all times — we don’t want our curious New Forest ponies popping into the garden uninvited!

Location, location, location...

Riverview Cottage is brilliantly located for adventurers, families and foodies. Pull on your
boots – wide acres of open Forest are only along the lane where you can head off into a wild
landscape crisscrossed by miles of tracks and paths. Turn left out of the gate for ‘Brock Beach’ a riverside spot for dipping your toes, found near
the entrance to Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa with restaurant and bar. Or turn right for a walk
along the lane of about 20 minutes to The PIG’s greenhouse restaurant. There’s a choice of local horse riding experiences while a picturesque 18-hole golf course as well as cycle hire is available in Brockenhurst – a charming village that’s less than a mile away. Brockenhurst is known for a tasty assortment of traditional independents, from an
award-winning bakery to an excellent butcher’s and greengrocers. Fill your bags for picnics
and suppers while navigating donkeys and ponies wandering down the high street and
cyclists swishing through the ‘water splash’ ford across the end of the road.
Brockenhurst’s numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants include a choice of French bistro,
modern Italian, Indian and Thai cuisines as well as gastropubs and bars. For relaxed forays further afield, leave the car behind. Brockenhurst station has a branch line running to Lymington for coastal jaunts and Lymington Pier for island hopping to the Isle of Wight. It also has a main line service with trains to Southampton and Winchester in one
direction, and Christchurch and Bournemouth in the other. Adventures start right here.

Guests that have stayed here say...

This is a beautiful country house in Brockenhurst and the location couldn’t be better, just a short walk to the river and surrounded by stunning forest walks. There’s even a riding school nearby, which made it feel like a proper countryside experience! The house itself is gorgeous - spacious, comfortable, and full of character. We especially loved the outdoor pergola area, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine in the evening or enjoying breakfast in the sunshine, Being so close to The Pig Hotel and Brockenhurst village was a huge bonus — great food, local shops, and that friendly New Forest charm everywhere you go. You will leave feeling completely relaxed and can’t wait to come back. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful yet perfectly located New Forest getaway!
